Dr. Fayneese Miller, President, Hamline University, delivered a compelling plea to our graduates, "You have the power to change the world. I know I'm putting a lot on your shoulders, but you can handle it." Dr. Miller thoughtfully addressed the civil unrest and social injustice in America today. She shared her personal story of growing up in the church and the power she's witnessed in people coming together to do what's right. Dr. Miller confronted the loss of hope in America and challenged United's graduates to restore hope. "Because of the path you have chosen, your path is more, and should be more.
The next phase is how you help us reclaim our identity. This phase is how you help us restore our civility. The next phase is how we appreciate and act in accordance of that. There is no self without the other. The next phase is hope."Dr. Miller knows a thing or two about restoring hope. Her long list of credentials includes being "the first native born, African American woman to be promoted to associate professor with tenure at Brown University."
On July 1, 2015, Dr. Miller was appointed as the 20th President of Hamline University, the first African American and second female to serve in this role. Learn more about her 30-year career in higher education, academic leadership, and social psychology at
