We all are faced with devastating news this morning about the killing of people engaged in prayer in the mosques of Christchurch, New Zealand. The irony of the city's name underscores the hypocrisy of the hatred.
While the loss of life this day is horrible; we must also recognize that the tolerance of hate speech and white supremacy rhetoric, along with the chronic acceptance of the defining of "other" as unwelcome and less worthy, is the proximate and underlying cause of such killings!
The need for effective spiritual leadership through times like these is the exact reason why schools like United exist along with our communities of faith. Both in grieving the current loss of life and in bettering the norms of our world.
This is not a time to be individually overwhelmed and isolated; it is a time to stand up and lead toward love, reconciliation and a day when all people are welcome, safe and acknowledged as people of God.
